Renewable, Organic and Related Carbon Aerogel Monoliths from the Polycondensation of Tannin with 5-(Hydroxymethyl)furfural

Abstract As a result of the global demand for sustainable products, suitable alternative to resorcinol-formaldehyde aerogels, which are frequently used as precursors carbon is searched for. In this study, replacement petroleum-derived formaldehyde with natural, biobased crosslinker, namely 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (5-HMF) shown, and synthesis renewable, monolithic tannin aerogels demonstrated. Compared well-known tannin-formaldehyde green shows lower reactivity crosslinker associated gelation times well specific surface areas at organic stage. Nonetheless, morphologies synthesis-structure relationships follow similar trends both tannin-based e.g., pore size influenced by initial pH in same manner. The turnover carbothermal treatment results enhanced high-specific tannin-5-HMF-based even slightly outperform those obtained from aerogels. This suggests that they convenient aerogel applications.
